Get Your Game on at Discovery Arena!
Discover more of what Global Finals has to offer by checking out Discovery Arena! In this area, teams will have the opportunity to participate in five different challenges created just for this event. From building a Rube Goldberg device to improv games to participating in secret spy training, check out these awesome activities below!
This installation features water-themed team building challenges! Throughout the day, three different challenges will be offered on rotation:
- Icebergs – For this activity, teams must use the “icebergs” (carpet circles) to traverse the sea. The goal is simply to get everyone from one side to the other. Once physical contact with an iceberg ends, it is removed from the playing area so players must be thoughtful about their positioning, timing, and all members of their group to traverse the course. The number of “icebergs” can be scaled up or down depending on the number of participants, and this activity can accommodate several teams working together with a shared goal.
- Sharks! – Teams must use their “ships” (custom disks of varying diameters – 12” to 30”) to cross the sea. Each team member must keep a hand on the disk at all times while in the water. Whenever a shark is spotted (as announced by a facilitator) everyone gets on their ship. When the ship is larger, it is easy to fit everyone. As the journey continues, the available ships shrink in size, and teams must get creative to keep everyone out of the shark-filled waters.
- Bag Ships – Participants must stick together to complete this challenge successfully. Everyone gets in a giant bag (reaching about waist high) that will fit the entire team. They may not talk as they attempt to make it from one side to the other as quickly as possible, either in a competitive race or simply as a challenge for completion. Teams must cleverly find a way to coordinate and communicate collective group movement to complete this task.
When participants put on a pair of wireless two-channel headphones, they will be transported to a secret spy training! Amongst the crowds of the general concourse, players will sneak, surprise, dance and pose their way through a variety of custom scripted and recorded spy training prompts. Participants listening to different channels will end up helping each other gain experience through complementing physical actions. With the training running on loop, participants may pick up a pair of headphones and jump in or out of the games at any point.
DIY Rube Goldberg
This installation offers a fun opportunity to tinker and experiment! Participants may choose from a huge selection of tubes, containers, and interesting objects to create a functional path that will carry a small ball from the top to the bottom of a large wall. The wall, made of pegboard, will allow for pieces to easily be added and removed.
Teams roll the dice to determine unique elements—characters, props, and locations—in this improv challenge, a throwback to the 2016 DI Adventure Race. Checking their rolled numbers against a giant chart of options, teams must create and perform a short scene utilizing their randomly selected elements. A seasoned improviser will guide them through the activity, playing along in the scenes.
Participants will play a large-scale version of this classic game! A large cylinder will contain numerous balls held up by wooden dowels. Players must strategically remove the dowels, one by one, trying to keep the balls from spilling. Both playing and resetting this colorful large-scale game offers a fun activity for participants.
