Safety is Our #1 Priority

If you or your team is in need of assistance in any type of incident, please call the GF22 Command Center at 816-513-5312. You should report any suspicious person or activity to the nearest law enforcement officer or Global Finals event staff member. If you have a non-emergency medical situation that requires attention, please seek assistance from our first aid location (3rd Floor skywalk near 3500), event security officer, event staff or police officer.


UPDATE: 3.30.22

In following CDC guidelines and recommendations, we are writing to let you know that, as of March 30, 2022, Global Finals will be a mask-optional event. However, please keep in mind that this is subject to change based on local and CDC recommendations and guidelines at the time of the event.

Destination Imagination continues to encourage everyone who is eligible and able to be vaccinated. Vaccination is the leading public health prevention strategy to end the COVID-19 pandemic. Promoting vaccination can help schools safely return to in-person learning as well as to extracurricular activities and sports, like Destination Imagination!

Destination Imagination considers the safety of its students, volunteers, and creative community to be the number one priority in hosting Global Finals.

The event will primarily take place in the Kansas City metropolitan downtown area. Our three venues have impeccable histories providing safety and security. We have partnered with security professionals, along with the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department, and emergency management personnel to oversee and execute the safety and security program.

Below is information about health and safety that we encourage you to share with your team. We may add to and edit this list as we learn more about the best ways to enhance the on-site experience and safety.

We can’t wait to see you at Global Finals. For the well-being of all attendees, we strongly recommend that you be vaccinated and boosted if you are eligible and able.

Health & COVID-19


– Masks will be optional.
– You may track the Covid-19 Community Level at the CDC website here. (Kansas City is located within Jackson County, MO.)
– Masks will be available on site for those who need one.
– If you are at high risk for severe illness, talk to your healthcare provider about whether you need to wear a mask and take other precautions.

Kansas City Convention Center Enhancements

– Hand sanitizer stations are located around all Kansas City Convention Center facilities.
– Additional cleaning of high-touch areas like doorknobs and escalator rails will be in place.

Vaccination Requirements for Staff & Volunteers

– All DI staff and volunteers are required to be vaccinated in order to attend.

On-Site Medical Team

An on-site medical team will be available in case of emergencies.

Security Measures in Place

– 24-hour building security for all areas of the event.
– Strict credentialing system for ALL attendees and working staff that easily identifies individuals that are authorized for the event.
– Bag search upon entry into Kansas City Convention —– Center and T-Mobile Center. (Please bring only what you need to ensure a speedy entry into each facility. Clear bags are encouraged to expedite the security process.)
– Unified Command Center with phone number.
– Uniformed Event Security and Police Officers.
– CCTV throughout facilities.
– Traffic control.

Safety Tips

– Always have a head count of your team.
– Please have details of each team member readily available on your mobile device or a simple notepad.
– Make sure that you have both legal and decided names for each member.
– Stick together and move as a group.
– Always have your event Credentials.
– Make sure that each member knows which hotel they are staying at, but tell them not to give any specific details to any unknown individuals.
– Please make sure to have a form of identification while on-site. If you’re carrying a passport, we suggest making a color photocopy of your passports to have just in case, if needed.
– For international students speaking languages other than English, consider equipping them with an English translation of their name, group leader name and contact information.
– Rely on any uniformed staff for assistance if you have a question or concern.
– Familiarize yourself with the CID Safety Ambassadors. – You will see them throughout the city wearing yellow jackets. They can assist when needed or can summon the police.

Municipal Arena Clear Bag Policy

A clear bag policy will be in effect at the Municipal Arena. Each team will receive a clear bag at registration. Team members should plan to bring minimal items. All items holding pins will have to be removable and must be easily examined. To avoid long wait times, please refrain from placing any pins on any articles of clothing that cannot be removed. Pin binders will not be allowed into the arena, so we encourage you to place pins on a pin towel, lanyard, or in your clear, approved plastic bag.

In the event of an emergency at Global Finals, an announcement will be made over the loudspeaker in the Convention Center. A notification will also be sent out through the Global Finals app.
