Seldom does an elementary team leave the technical appraisers stumped. This machine was performing tasks when poked with a stick. This stick was activating magnetic switches that controlled servo motors to complete tasks such as lifting and steering. A simple solution to a complex problem surely is a sign of true creativity. This team had an innovative approach to creating their costumes. They used recycled plastic bags and candy wrappers laid in layers and fused together to form "fabric." The design and pattern varied depending on the source of the material, and the team artfully used the different "fabrics" to create reversible Kenyan costumes.

The Answer:

A solution that blew away the appraisers.

The team, staying within the challenge requirements, used their mini-vehicle to make the seemingly impossible, possible.

Right before our eyes, this mini vehicle -- the size of a soda can -- was transformed into larger contraptions that towed the ginormous manned vehicle across the floor and raised it up into the air.

In addition to their technical solution, the team incorporated equally creative story elements. These included a tree whose wilted leaves perk up when the drought ends using a drill and strings. An all-around impressive solution from the team from Tahoma Learning Community in Maple Valley, Washington.

The Renaissance Award

This award is given for outstanding skill in the areas of engineering, design, or performance.

We would like to congratulate an exceptionally well-rounded team for both the engineering of their machines and the design of their scenery prop. Set during Shakespeare's time, the folding prop was enhanced by 3-D elements such as a team-member-created stained glass window. This, combined with the team's knowledge of systems, including mechanical, electrical and pneumatic systems, set them apart from the rest.
